Illinois offers amnesty to delinquent taxpayers in hopes of collecting $175 million

Illinois taxpayers who owe the state back taxes can pay off their debts during a six-week period this fall without penalties or interest.

The Illinois Department of Revenue on Tuesday announced the tax amnesty program, which is part of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s plan for the budget year that began July 1. The grace period runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15.

Taxpayers who have outstanding liabilities from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2018, can avoid paying penalties and interest if they pay up in full, according to the Revenue Department.

The governor’s office expects the program to bring in $175 million in previously uncollected tax revenue to help fund the state’s $40 billion budget.
